It has been a while since I last posted here in the blog, mainly because since I created the twitter and facebook account I’ve been posting feed updates through there. However, today I will share some thoughts and numbers about the current status of my BatteryCare project.

I must say, I never thought that my little app would become so widely used around the world! As you know I keep developing it because that’s something I love to do and I’m proud that people enjoy it alot.

Recieving positive feedback and congratulations about my work is the most rewarding thing in a developers world!

So, some facts:

We are almost reaching 1 year of public release status and until now, the program has been updated 46 times! This is the consequence of being constantly in the workbench, improving!

Since the last update, on the 4th of February, more than 50.000 updates were downloaded, so what does this mean? Well, at first glance it could tell us the aproximate number of BatteryCare installations out there, and we might assume that there’s around 50.000 people using the program around the world.

Everytime the program boots, it checks for updates by contacting the update server, so I have the statistics about the daily usage of the program, here’s a graph to better ilustrate:

As you can see the number of visits are also around the 50.000.

I never thought it would reach a scale like this! I’m very happy that there is a full stadium of people using BatteryCare around the world!

So, the current status is presented, now what are the guidelines for the future?

Well there’s so many improvements I want to bring to the app, but recently I haven’t had the time to develop them!

Some things that are on the roadmap for a near future:

• A new settings panel, since the one in the main window is small and will not have the ability to acomodate the growing number of options in the program;
• Automatic battery calibration procedure;
• Automate the process of running BatteryCare with admin previleges even with UAC activated;
• Provide more robust discharge cycles managment, sometimes the file that contains this info gets corrupted if Windows crashes;
• Improve the main window interface so that it can blend better with the Windows Aero style, giving the program a more professional look;
• Provide the user with the most configurations possible, in order to give the user full power and control over the application, full customization is the key;
• Ultimately, some harder stuff, like monitoring multiple batteries, and also providing the ability to create battery profiles so that users that swap batteries keep different statistics for each battery.

So, basically, the way to go in the future is working on making a good tool into a better tool with more features and more customization! All this in a simpler package that even the average Joe can handle

My wishes now are that the program will continue to grow and even more people use it!

Also I want to thank you all for the feedback and tips, and also a big THANK YOU to everyone who has been supporting my work through donations. Small as they may be, they all help.

I will not post in portuguese anymore due to the globalization of the project, also I guess almost everybody reads english in these days, thanks to the “interwebs” phenomenon

At this point I have the 0.9.7.2 version ready to release to everyone, but I’m just waiting for a translation to be verified one last time in order to achieve perfection I hope I’ll get this translation files this week, and as soon as I get them, the update will be released.

Since the error reporting mechanism was very rudimentar, I implemented a more elaborate one. Hopefully it will be used few times! This new mechanism displays an error report window once an errour occours and causes the program to crash. The user can describe the circumstances in which the error occoured and then an email with debbugging info is sent directly to the BC mail account. It’s another step further in improving user experience and usability.

5 new languages are coming too, I already mentioned French and German, and now there’s also Spanish, Turkish and Latvian. All thanks to some nice BattyerCare users who offered their linguistic services!

I also fixed a misreading bug in the CPU reading temperature for the 45nm (Penryn) Intel CPUs. Now reads correctly, before it read less 5ºC than normal.

A esta altura já tenho a versão 0.9.7.2 pronta para lançar para todos os utilizadores, mas estou apenas à espera que uma tradução seja verificada uma última vez para que fique tudo perfeitinho. Espero ter esses ficheiros traduzidos ainda esta semana e assim que os tiver o update é lançado.

Dado que o mecanismo de relato de erros actual é muito rudimentar (mostra uma janela com o erro e pede ao utilizador para enviar um screenshot para o mail do BC), implementei um mais elaborado. Espero que seja usado poucas vezes! Este novo mecanismo mostra uma janela onde o utilizador pode inserir uma descrição do erro e adicionar o seu nome e email para contacto futuro se quiser. Quando o utilizador submete o relatório, é-me enviado um mail com os dados do erro para que possa tentar descobrir o que se passa e corrigir.É mais um melhoramento a nível da experiência do utilizador e da usabilidade, que exijo a melhor possível.

5 novos idiomas vão estar então disponíveis, já foi mencionado o Francês e o Alemão e agora temos também o Espanhol, Turco e Letão. Tudo graças aos simpáticos utilizadores do BC que se prestaram a este serviço.

Também corrigi um bug na leitura da temperatura do CPU que no caso de processadores Intel de 45nm (Penryn) lia 5ºC a menos. Agora lê correctamente.

Thanks to an extremely nice german user and his wife, BatteryCare will support French and German in the next release.

I’ve just finished compiling a test version for them to test.

Another user from Latvia is also translating and soon I will have the translation with me.

As you can see, there’s support for Fahrenheit degrees temperature. It contains an option to choose ºC or ºF.

There are some new icons, and the Help is finnaly linked to the FAQ in the website. I fixed also some bugs that users kindly reported via e-mail.

Soon it will be available via the auto-update.

Como se pode ver adicionei a possibilidade de ler a temperatura em graus Fahrenheit, dado que agora existem muitos utilizadores estrangeiros.

Coloquei uns ícones novos e finalmente o menu da Ajuda está ligado à FAQ disponível no site. Corrigi alguns bugs que alguns utilizadores, simpaticamente, fizeram o favor de me alertar via e-mail.

Brevemente estará disponível na actualização automática.

Well, I guess I skipped a version number, that’s ok!

There were so many important features in this latest version that I decided to hop to a more significant number.

Here are the changes in this version:

New feature: Power plan automatic switching is now supported in Windows XP.
New feature: The program now registers all the discharge cycles performed.

Modification: The statistical remaining time calculation is no longer restricted to the laptops that do not show the remaining time natively. Now all users can use this feature.

Bug fix: A crash occurs when the user did not select one power plan and the power plan auto-switching option is active.
Bug fix: Sometimes the program crashed while trying to set the orange icon.

Improvements made in the interface relative to the when the target discharge cycles count is achieved.
Minor internationalization corrections.

Bom, parece que saltei um número na versão, afinal a 0.9.6.4 é a 0.9.7.0. Isto porque as alterações nesta nova versão são tão significativas que se justifica o salto.

Aqui fica a lista de novidades:

Nova funcionalidade: A mudança de planos de energia agora é suportada em Windows XP.
Nova funcionalidade: O programa agora regista o número total de ciclos de descarga.

Alteração: O cálculo estatístico do tempo restante deixa de estar restringido aos portáteis que necessitavam dele. Agora todos os utilizadores podem usufruir desta funcionalidade.

Correcção de bug: Ocorria um crash quando não se seleccionava um perfil de energia quando a opção de troca de perfil estava activada.
Correcção de bug: Esporadicamente ocorria um crash quando o programa tentava mudar o ícone para laranja.

Melhoramentos no interface quando era atingido  o número alvo de ciclos de descarga.
Correcções menores ao nível da internacionalização.

There are still many Windows XP users, and the current version  of BatteryCare (0.9.6.3) does not support power plan switching in this system, only in Vista/Seven.
But that is about to change because the power plan auto-switching for XP is now ready for launch on the next version. It has been tested thoroughly and it’s ready for every one of those XP users.

Version 0.9.6.4 is excpected to be released in the next couple of days.

PS – I am writing in english from now on because BatteryCare is now spreaded across the globe, fortunately

como alguns de vós já sabem, a leitura da temperatura do CPU não é feita da maneira mais correcta e nem sempre corresponde à temperatura real em alguns portáteis. O método usado não obtém os valores de temperatura do núcleo do processador, mas sim de uma zona térmica dificilmente identificável que pode estar muito perto ou muito afastada do processador.

Na próxima versão será introduzido um novo método de leitura que é fiável, pois obtém o valor da temperatura do núcleo do processador, mas apenas em processadores Intel. Até ver foi testado apenas em Core2Duo e com sucesso.

Conto lançar a actualização brevemente.

como devem ter reparado o ritmo de actualizações diminuiu e deve-se fundamentalmente a duas razões:

A primeira é que estou sem tempo pois as responsabilidades académicas sobrepõem-se.

A segunda é que o programa atingiu um nível de maturidade e fiabilidade aceitável.

Existem alguns pequenos bugs que já tenho conhecimento, mas a curto prazo não conto poder resolvê-los devido à falta de disponibilidade.

1500 é a estimativa de utilizadores que diariamente usam o programa. 80% são de Portugal.

10000 utilizadores por mês consultam o site, fundamentalmente para consultar o guia.

Muitos são os mails que recebo de pedidos de esclarecimento sobre as mais diversas questões relacionadas com o programa e uso da bateria.

Zero é o número de pessoas que apoiaram o projecto através das doações.

- Valores da bateria irreais já não aparecem;

- Correcção de alguns termos;

- Um novo instalador mais robusto;

- Correcção de pequenos bugs.

O tempo não tem sido muito mas estas evoluções têm estado a ser desenvolvidas progressivamente. Em breve sairá uma nova versão.
